Whether it would have done exactly the same on other brands is possible I suppose but when my filters only cost £6, I don't see the point in experimenting with others to find out.
I don't feel like a slave to marketing and saving 1 or 2 pounds every oil change makes no sense.

If you only buy your filters from Volvo, you are getting ripped off because Volvo charge £8 more than Mann for the exact same filter. The only difference is the box in which it comes.
how do you know ? I read a volvo test of about 10 different make oil filters back in the 70's , yes they were the white Mann made ones back then ... But not the same ... wish i could find the article ..

For the D5 and many Volvo made engines, they're the same. 100%

Looking for the correct fuel filter for my 2012 model year C30 1.6D2 DRIVe online and at factors and I was having a real problem finding the correct one. I needed an air and oil as well, but that seemed straightforward.

The prices varied from about £12 to £45 for the fuel filter. One must be for the wrong car I thought.

So I rang a local main dealer to sort it out ...... and find out what they charged for a 'real, genuine' Volvo fuel filter. The parts guy said "if you buy 3 filters I can give you a 40% discount". Stunned I said "Have I heard correctly, did you say forty or fourteen?" "Forty". Couldn't believe it. Got the fuel, oil and air for £53.13. Deep joy.

Incidentally I'm not one of those who chuff on about only Volvo parts. As you've all posted they don't make them anyway. Just put then in a blue box and charge a shed.

Very wrong ..
The fuel filter on the D2 is unique to volvo . It has a high capacity element to volvo specifications not the filter manufacturers standard filter or fords specification .The blue dot identifies this ! Fit a pattern part and you will have engine problems sooner or later . Sooner if you don't use the car much ..
All volvo make are the body shell, engine and transmission . All the rest is made by outside suppliers BUT to volvos unique specifications , they don't take standard off the shelf parts ..

Thanks Clan, very good to know. Appreciate your help.

Just had a look (not fitted yet), yup blue dot. For a fuel filter it is a helluva chunk/piece of kit. I'm not surprised it is so costly. Although with my unexpected discount the real thing was only £31.82.
