Late type steering wheels - how do you get the cover off?

How do you take the cover off a late type steering wheel? Is it just a case of pulling it? Held on by clips of some sort?

On my Amazon I need to take the cowling off to fit a proper overdrive stalk and on my 1800 I need to replace the horn wire.

Early Amazon with large chrome horn ring,
the horn ring is held in place by 2 screws seen from rear of wheel.
Later Amazon with "butterfly" style centre is simply pulled off and pushed into place.
I cannot help with the P1800 type.

As regards the late type Amazon (with steering lock): Have you taken the steering wheel off?

As I recall (it’s a long time ago that I did it), you have to take the steering wheel off first and then undo some screws - the three indicated at X in the picture. Once that has been done the cowling will come off. It takes some manoeuvring - the cowling has to move back and to the one side, because it has to come off over the end of the steering rod and the indicator stalk.

Yes, as already said, the the butterfly type centre just pulls off.

I remember having to do the horn wire down through the steering column shaft on an Amazon and resorting to tears. I can see it's no easier on an 1800

If a horn wire is still in place, solder on the new wire to the existing at the Steering Box and use the old wire to pull the new wire through. If there is no wire in place, work from the bottom up, unless you want to relive your previous experience...

Yes, unlike on the Amazon where no wire was left, on my 1800 the wire is snapped inside the tube and luckily there is about 10cm wire sticking out the bottom, I'll do as you've told me and solder the new leaf onto that and feed it up through. Gladly I don't have to poke wire up through that tiny little hole. However, it's still not a job I'm looking forward to.

If it is not visible at all at the Coupling, you might try pushing it up from what is left at the bottom...you might find that it will poke out the shaft below the Coupling...then solder on new wire and proceed as mentioned...

If there's only a bit of wire sticking out the bottom, but there's no sign of it at the Hardy Coupling, there's not much point in soldering the new wire on...because the point of doing that is to pull it through the St Box and up the tube to the Coupling. BUT...if wire broken but stilll accessible at the Coupling, solder on new and pull it up, route around Coupling, and push it to the St Wheel.

...only if all else fails and a new has to be installed is the advice to push it up from St Box important.
