Default Dash cam

Just wondering if anyone has a dash cam in their xc90 and how you went about wiring it up. I dont want cables visible all over the place and i dont want to use the 12v socket..i have one from my old car and it has an adapter that piggybacks a fuse in the main fusebox, but still needed to find an earth. Is it poss to get a 12v from the intellisafe sensors by the mirror?...or am i better off leaving it to an expert...

I wouldn't attempt it yourself and for the reason below I think it's probably not a good idea anyway.

Many (most?) dash cams transmit an excessive amount of RF, often through the power feed cables acting as an antenna. This can manifest itself as interference on DAB radios but given that the safety-critical Intellisafe sensors are housed around the mirror, I suspect it's very risky to fit a dash cam near those sensors.

I've just seen this which seems to confirm my thinking.

I run one in mine all of the time. Fitted myself from day one. Pleased to say I've had non of the effects reported on other forums.

I don't have a 'how to' on the install but it was very straightforward.

I fitted a RoadHawk HD to my car and have had no issues with it. I have had a couple of well documented other issues with the car, I do not believe that these are dash cam related.

Mine is fitted behind the rear view mirror. The cable goes along the top of the screen, down the passenger side a-pillar (The trim is fitted with a torq bolt behind the SRS logo and some clips) then down the back of the dash, round under the passenger carpet and then rises to connect to the back of the cigarette socket. The cigarette socket remains in full use for other items, you just scotch clip or solder into the wiring supplying the back of this socket.

It all looks very professional and the cable is only visible right at the camera.

I took quite a few bits of trim off, but it all clips/torq bolts off easily enough. Working under the glove box is easy enough as all the bolts are visible. Once that trim is off it is easy to lift the carpet. The trim on the side of the central tunnel is again just clips, just get your fingers under one of the edges and start gently pulling.

The biggest faff is the a-pillar trim. Knowing that there is a torq bolt behind the SRS logo is the key to this. Once that is out it is all clips and a bit of fiddling for the air vent duct.

There is an airbag in this area so use your brain and you will be fine. I routed my cable with all the other cables (and the washer pipe) in this area and made sure that it was clipped into the harness with all the other cables so that there was no chance of fouling the airbag.

Hope this helps, please message me/reply to this if you get stuck.

Then clean the 3M VHB off the back of the mount (again use heat and roll it off), scratch the mount to provide a key and clean with IPA.

Then add new 3m VHB pad to the back and reapply (once having cleaned the screen area with IPA too).

I have re-used my mount maybe 5 times now, after 2 car changes and a few screen changes.

You can buy the whole mount from Roadhawk for £15, you can buy new pads for the mount from roadhawk for maybe £10 I think, or you can buy a full A4 sheet of 3m VHB from ebay for just £10.

Buying the sheet and then re-using the mount is the best value option and what I did. VHB is a great find too. We used some of it to secure the numberplate to the back of our 18Tonne forklift at work. Someone then wacked the back of it and the numberplate was all smashed and mangled but the bond was as strong as ever....

I have decided to leave it on as the car goes in October.
The dealer can remove it, if they want to.
I just use the suction mount for the cam.

Fair enough, I just find the suction mount a less neat option.
