iOS 11 & CarPlay problems

I updated to iOS 11 today and find that the entertainment system keeps switching from DAB radio to CarPlay for no reason every five minutes.

Just a heads up for those of you that use CarPlay that you might want to wait until the bugs have been fixed before updating your iPhone. Would be interesting to hear if anyone else is having any problems.

Appreciate the heads-up, and this is indeed making me think twice. I was planning to wait 24-48 hours just to keep an eye on tech news sites and see if iOS 11 issues were reported that might affect me, wasn't necessarily thinking about the car but glad I was browsing here.

The problem now is... Any issues are more likely to be with Volvo's software than with Apple's software. So waiting for a fix from Volvo could take a while, so I might just cave in and update anyway within a week or two, but will see.

In the meantime, if anyone else gets the same thing please do add to this thread, and maybe put what model iPhone you're using in the info as well.

On the subject of iOS11, although not notified, I checked for software update on my iPad.
It is available at 1.8GB download.
Not sure if to go ahead and install it?
Has anyone updated their iPad and have there been any problems?

Pretty much all of the decent improvements in iOS 11 are aimed at iPads rather than iPhones, so it's actually much more worth upgrading for tablets than it is for mobiles.

If you want to be safe, give it until the weekend and keep an eye on tech news (Engadget, Gizmodo, 9to5Mac, etc) every day just to scan the headlines and see if there are any reports of major issues, but tbh I'd be very surprised if there was anything major that had evaded the beta stages these days.

One thing worth noting - iOS 11 removes support for 32bit apps. Which means there might be some old apps that will stop working once you upgrade, however I believe that as part of the upgrade process Apple let you see which apps will stop working after the install, however don't hold me to that. But I think I read yesterday it shows you a list before you commit.

I upgraded a 7 and iPads and haven’t had any issues. The upgrade itself was completely glitch free and car play hasn’t had any issues for me.

I didn’t notice the Lane guidance feature that had been previewed in various places, though. But I did just use remote start via VOC - it took 5 seconds from pressing start to it happening - much faster than previously. It may be coincidental, of course.

Well, I have not updated to iOS 11 but I've had problems with CarPlay for the last few days with the connection to the iPhone coming and going at random!

Probably another Volvo software issue regardless of the update.

Just updated iPad and everything seems to be working, without any problems.
Looks like I did not have any 32 bit apps, etc.

Either when I first connect or stop and start the car I quite often have to unplug and plug back in my Iphone 7 to get Carplay to work. Quite poor really as I paid £300 for it.

To be honest, I use iPhones, iPads, Siri, Mac's at home and at work all day long, but I've never used CarPlay on a single journey. I've plugged in a few times to try various things, decided that if feels completely un-integrated and that the CarPlay apps offered limited and poor functionality. Wish I'd spent the £300 (and a bit more) for the third row climate or heated rear seats.

Now, I have a mate with a older car which had limited infotainment, no sat nav etc, and he retro-fitted a new head unit with CarPlay, in this situation, it looks a lot better and more in place and offers great functionality that the car wouldn't have otherwise.

I agree with the “doesn’t look integrated” comment, but do like the functionality given that I can’t reply to messages using Sensus (iPhone 7).

On the car play adverts I think they use a VW display - the soft buttons fill it perfectly, whereas on the central display it only occupies the bottom half and has a different font/background colour etc. It looks very much like an afterthought - I suspect that Apple wouldn’t allow anyone to mess about with the way it looks.
