oil dipstick
Hello members
I have a problem. When I wanted to check my oil this morning and I pulled the oil dipstick out of the engine, the front piece of the oil dipstick broke down about 1cm. That piece of plastic is now probably in the bottom of the oil pan can it hurt? Would it come out at the next oil change or may it be completely grinded or something like that? Somebody also had something like that and what's the solution for that?

I think your first option is to drain out the oil from the sump and hope it comes out while doing so, you certainly do not want it floating about in the sump even if no harm comes from it, it will likely get drawn to the oil pump and may restrict oil flow to the top end of the engine. If that doesn't work, the sump pan will need to be removed. You shouldn't have a problem getting a replacement dipstick for a reasonable price, I replaced mine with new for about £12.

But (Depending on what car you have - your "Volvo S40 1.9D T4 102Bhp" is a new one on me!) If you do have a diesel spend the extra few quid and get a metal dipstick (about £18 last time I bought one) - you'll never have to worry about the plastic breaking again.

I have a vacuum plunger device to bleed brakes. I also have an endoscope to look in the sump and the plastic piece has the color red so i schould be able to find it there Maybe if I let off the oil and then put the vacuum tube into the sump, I can perhaps extract the plastic piece of the oil dipstick. Otherwise there is nothing else i can do than to take the sump of the car but is this a lot of work ?

Sorry for trying to help, I'm sure he's capable of seeing that I have a different model, I think he was a little more concerned with how to remove the offending escapee! Hopefully the extra £6 won't cause them too many palpitations 😳

Sorry ilikewatch, didn't realise it was in the ops signature, my sincerest apologies, on my night shift so a bit tired 😴.
Shell51, not really sure on sump removal as not had to resort to removing one but from memory, there may be a crossmember in the way. Get yourself underneath, remove the undertray and take a look, you'll have to when you drain the oil out anyway. Hopefully you'll get lucky and it'll lodge itself in the drain hole 🤞 |

Indeed its a 102hp with the renault engine D4192T4 and it has indeed the crossmember underneath My dipstick is one that is rotated on the engine. I wish it was a common one than it was easy to solve as i can see on youtube.

No problem :-) Just thought it was worth clarifying as a different engine might require different advice.

Removing the sump pan isn't too much of an ordeal, but there are a lot of bolts and some of them are difficult to access, and I think they're unequal lengths too. You'll also need to use a liquid gasket sealant type stuff. Volvo charge around £20 a tube if I remember right, but opted for a cheaper one at around £3.50 or thereabouts. A year on, no problem with it.
