I would think that unless very carefully applied, it's likely to look a bit 'naff'...

DIY wrapping can be a tough ask, but can be done if you're patient.
Preparation is key. The surface must be smooth for the wrap to lay down well. If your lacquer is bubbly or grainy, it will show. In fact, the rubbing down or cutting back you may need to do is about what you'd need to prep for paint.

100% correct about the prep. Don’t think for one minute that the wrap will hode imperfections in the substrate you’re wrapping because it won’t. Needs to be as flat and smooth as if you were going to spray it for good results. 👍🏻

How about contacting a local body/paintshop to get a quote?
Is the basecoat is okay it maybe possible to flat and re-laquer, would give a better finish than wrapping imo...

Thats what I'd do - get it flatted down and re-lacquered.
Maybe treat the rest of the car to a professional 'paint correction'/polish and the whole car will look likes its been resprayed.

Bear in mind, the roof is going to be the hardest area to wrap, I used to fit vinyl roofs and it's quite a task...you WILL need help if you try it

We did consider doing some wrapping on my son's first car, it too was covered in dents and scrapes although most of them were on doors or wings that we could have replaced with better ones from the scrappy, it was just the rear quarter with a bad dent that we considered filling as best we could and wrapping rather than painting for the fun of trying something new. In the end he traded up to a less dented one so I missed the opportunity, I'd be interested to know how you get on if you do have a go.
