you want to use 75W80 GL4 oil. Ideally Volvo's own is recommended.

I need to change oil quickly. I cant wait for Original Volvo oil to arrive due to work commitments and urgency i want to get on with detecting what is actually wrong with my gearbox.

Gear changes are notchy, and car sometimes clunks and judders slightly when i engage first gear. There is sometimes also deep moan, deep squeak noise when releasing clutch that i can reproduce when i want really.

My first step is to change oil, i suspect that has never been done. I dont mind doing a quick oil change with original Volvo oil once i got to the bottom of the issues, and i can not not have a car, so will this do http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_255220

For the short term?
I cant just do nothing and wait for my box to go bang. Fresh oil of correct specification by any manufacturer will surely be better than old oil at probably too low level.

It's perfectly OK to use Halfrauds box oil for a while.

I would never use Castrol Synthrax in anything.
The real McCoy Volvo 75/80 box oil listed by Skandix is the correct one for normal use.
For abnormal use, like heavy horse box towing in summer, I use Liqui Moly 75/90 box oil, BUT check their oil guide first.
If the box is well worn, then I think LM Moly box oil additive helps, BUT only one tube.

Its rare that anyone changes the oil in the gearbox.
I'm still to do mine and i've owned it for the past 2 years.
Thankfully though, my car had full service history up until i purchased it and it wasn't due for another couple of thousand miles.
I changed it immediatly however and it's been done six times in total.
Overkill i know but two of those was due to me doing work on the car and having to drain the oil anyway.
Sadly, though my car came with full service history, it doesn't detail what was done in the form of receipts.
It only has the stamps in the service book.

Anyway, as for your specific issue, It may only be a symptom of a clutch release bearing going bad.
Either that or you may have an issue with thrust bearing in the gearbox which means it needs to go to a specialists to sort.
It's not all that expensive a job to sort usually but the main thing is, it has to be better than buying a second hand gearbox which you have no reliable info on the kind of abuse it has suffered, unless its come from a reputable member of this site.

Personally, i would go with Volvo's own oils but failing that, i'd go for the next best thing which in my opinion would be the Mobil ( http://www.mobil.co.uk/UK-English-LC...shc-75w90.aspx ) or Castrol variants.

Default 2003 S40 manual gearbox fill plug.

Just changed o/s drive shaft on S40 (RHD) and can't find fill plug on gearbox to top up. M5M42 gearbox...I think! I've been advised access is via n/s wheelarch but I must be a bit dim because I can't see it! 24mm? Pictures would be nice.
