My 20L S&A arrived yesterday - I'll be doing mine as soon as the weather dries up.

It’s interesting this conversation and I will give the definitive answer....
1).The tooling required to do this on an XC (as you don’t have to raise the vehicle) is sub £50 for top quality stuff. £10 for cheap BandQ stuff that may not last too long. The sealing washer and 2 o-rings are about £15.00 from Volvo. The fluid is fairly expensive as noted (it’s not £23.00 l). The valve block, once sludged up will not leave you change from £1,000 and the gearbox probably not change from £3,000 plus. 2). The sump dump method is all over you tube. It’s simple to do, anyone can do it. And if you do a sump dump with less than 3l renewed you have no requirements to reset gearbox adaptive learning etc. The temperature of the vehicle (it’s supposed to be at temp) will not be exceeded idling in your drive. 3). Use extreme caution with fluid recommendations. The Volvo forum has well known lore to ‘only use JWS3309, nothing else’. This is incorrect. In 2011 there was a change over and a further change to AW1. They are not compatible. For reference I changed mine at 72,000. It was brown, mature and not smelling. Once renewed it drove noticbly better. One great approach is to change 2.7l each year you service it. So there is the answer. £20 for fluid and an extra hour. Or a potential £1,000 to £4,000 repair bill. Anyone who doesn’t change the fluid themselves is rather physically not able to do so which is always an issue. Or they are stupid. |

Washing a car on your own grounds start around EUR 120, it gets higher easily, if it's not the first time and/or something gets into the ground. In both cases the restore of the ground is done by a contractor, paid by you. And it will get checked afterwards, also on you.

You can put AW1 in earlier cars and you can put 3309 in later cars. What could possibly go wrong? Tell us... Whilst Volvo did change from filling the TF80 boxes at the factory from 3309 to AW-1 around 2011, the XC90 was not changed until a few years later. But as above, it really doesn’t matter. If anyone is wanting to know what fluid to get - it is clearly documented in your owners manual.

If you want to service your car, you have different possibilities:
Washing the car is nearly the same, as the main concern is the environmental damage, so oil-trap it is or you use a self service washing place. There you have everything you need and pay normally by water consumption. I do something like a combination. I have a big canvas, where I can park my car on. Next thing is a big bucket of oil absorbing agent (I always have double the amount of fluid I use) and I can park out of sight of the street. Unfortunately my garage is too small for a Harley and a XC90 to work on... My last transmission fluid change was in the underground car park at my mother-in-law. Yeah, different places, different rules.

Paddy74 the rebel...
In my experience (16 years living there) Germans, as a nation, do like to obey orders. Cheers Dave |

Driving an old Harley makes me per-se a non-german regarding "obeying the rules". Unfortunately that doesn't make you a lot of friends here, but it's the quality, not the quantity that counts! And on the other hand, I'm a quarter Scotish, maybe that's the part that likes to break out sometimes. Not to get political on Brexit, but I had always hoped, to do my retirement in Scotland, we'll see how that goes after Brexit and new visa rules. Cheers Paddy (aka Patrick)
