removing aux pulley on crankshaft
Hi
I have a 2002 S40 T4 manual and trying to do the timing belt replacement. i have got to the point where i need to remove the aux pulley..the 4xM10 bolts. Whoever did the previous timing belt replacement has put those bolts on pretty tightly so i have 2 questions... 1. Are the 4xM10 bolts LH threads or RH threads?? 2. And the reason for question 1...when trying to turn the bolts (assuming RH thread) the crankshaft rotates...what can i do to prevent it rotating so i can apply some grunt to those bolts. I did try holding the crankshaft centre nut with a 32 socket but couldn't get enough leverage (the socket spanners intereferred with each other) which also leads to question 1. thanks in advance |

on a followup to my post....vida does not mention removing the aux pulley at all..but the haynes manual does...which is correct??
further, if one does NOT remove the aux pulley, how can one view the crankshaft timing mark?? Then again, Vida doesn't mention the crankshaft timing mark at all so is that marking not needed?? looking closely at that centre bolt...it seems to me that the aux pulley is held in place with that centre bolt...in which case what are the 4xM10 for?? questions questions questions.... |

and on a followup...some answers to those questions.
1. no need to remove the aux pulley. 2. the crankshaft timing mark is visible as per vida (yes they do show it). 3. removing the timing belt with the aux pulley in place requires twisting the belt but quite doable. As is for removal & replacing it on the tensioner. 4. yes space is tight. so timing belt removed, tensioner replaced. one note tho...keeping the inlet camshaft steady (its spring loaded??) while installing the belt was difficult - i dont know if locking the camshafts in place would have helped but next time i'll try that. |
