Default Stop start - stopping and not starting

Today I was in slow moving traffic heading down hill. Now I find the stop start is slightly overzealous and stops before the car has stopped sometimes, often restarting straight away if I take my foot off the break.

However today it stopped, the Rev counter went to “Ready” and then it went to OFF, and I got a message to turn the start knob to restart. Of course to do this I needed my foot on the break and the car in neutral - tricky whilst rolling down hill. Ended up pulling over, and then restarting - although it insisted I had to be in park first.

Anyone else experienced similar issues with their stop/start? I’m suspecting a dealer trip will lead to a software update...

Is it possible that the engine stalled? I would imagine that for start stop to engage in the first place the transmission must shift to neutral?

I had a 2005 BMW 5 series years ago and I managed to spin in which caused the engine to cut out. Like you I had to go back to park to restart it but was under the impression you can’t stall an automatic?
