Depends which gearbox you have. Merc's are not without their problems either.

Then your oil must meet jws3309 spec, read the various threads and make your choice,i've gone for the amsoil.

Just had a quote from my local inde to do an ATF flush and change. around £85 all in.

This was for an S60 so don't know if it is any different for the XC's using genuine volvo stuff to.
I spoke to the tech and he explained how they do it and it includes pumping all the old stuff out.
They garage I spoke with also give 10 percent to voc, so might be worth a call and a drive if you are in the south or west. It is ACC UK ltd in Farnborough. My S60 has had a few issues since i brought it in Nov and they have bent over backwards to help.
Also having the cambelt, tensioner and idler done whilst there as they came out very competitive on labour rates.

That seems very good value indeed.
What ATF are they using - is it the genuine Volvo stuff or something else?
Does the ATF on a S60/80 also need to meet JWS 3309 spec as well? If it does, it will be important to know exacxtly what oil they're using.

How much ATF is there in the S60/80 gearbox? If the garage is using genuine Volvo ATF, then it's definately worth considering driving to them and getting it changed while you wait, etc

Cheers,

Finbo

"Does the ATF on a S60/80 also need to meet JWS 3309 spec as well?"

Yes it does! Any S60/S80/V70/XC70/XC90 with the Aisin Warner box (i.e. everything but the old 2.9 and T6 engines with autos) will need JWS3309. (this applies to ALL 5 speed auto boxes used in Volvos, not certain about the newer 6 speed units, yet).

To do a proper flush, you need at least 12L of genuine ATF. I find it difficult to believe they can source that much and include labour charges for £85. Chances are they are using Dextron III which WILL kill these autoboxes.

My 2003 XC90 Owners manual says the GM4T65EV/GT(4-Speed GM automatic, FWD/AWD) "needs Dextron IIIG"

The AW55-50/51 (5-speed automatic, FWD/AWD) That's the Asin Warner geartronic. Needs "Volvo gearbox oil part no. 1161540-8 Do not blend with any other oil!"

I have the AW55-50/51 and use Amsoil full synthetic ATF and it's been fine for the last 2 years.

I rang the garage (ACC UK Ltd) and they confirmed they only use the genuine Volvo ATF.

But for a full flush the price would be a lot more than the £85 quoted. I was told around 6 litres would be used in the process which is very different to what Oilburner says (12 litres). I was also told they would use a flushing liquid in the process and that's why only 6 litres of genuine ATF would be used as the flushing liquid would help take everything out before the new ATF is put in.
