If there's no inbuilt option to display mph, consider using a head-up display. These simply plug into the OBD2 port. I bought one for less than £10 for my 2010MY XC70 as I find the speedometer very hard to read at a glance. The HUD can be configured to show metric or imperial units.

So to be clear, using a heads up display to only show your miles an hour speed is ok in order to pass an MOT?

Just quoting form the MOT regulations.....

"SPEEDOMETER
This inspection applies to all vehicles.
The following devices are not suitable as a speedometer:-
a) Those manufactured for bicycles,
b) Those that rely on GPS,
c) Those that require switching as a separate function to that of operating the vehicle,
d) Those that have a separate power source from the vehicle, or
e) Those that do not operate as an automatic function when the vehicle is driven."

A HUD that's connected to the OBD2 port would be fully compliant.

a) It's not made for bicycles
b) It doesn't rely on GPS
c) There's no switching involved in order for it to function
d) It shares the vehicles power source via the OBD2
e) It operates as an automatic function when the vehicle is driven.

What they would seem to be legislating against are GPS units that run off internal batteries and require switching on and off manually.

Plenty of mot inspectors on here, prehaps a couple could give their views. Ultimately it's them that sign the ticket and bare the costs if it's wrong.

Thanks guys, so there is a bit of confusion or doubt, hopefully an MOT person might clear it up when they pass by. Dont like the idea of pulling out binnacle and dismantling perspex to stick figures on dial!

Interesting story. There are several references to the meter being defined as 1/10 000 000 of the distance from the equator to the pole. That's what I meant.

Spoke to an MOT guy, (government run here) wasn't happy about an OBD attached HUD, so as per other thread, sticking figures on dial.
