Default D5 Noise

My euro 3 d5 is making a very unusual noise, its almost like a dry rubbing sound, a loud high pitched hum. Imagine a dry gate hinge.

The noise doesn't sound to be engine speed related but is definitely rotational and tends to happen at low speeds, for example when setting off. Doesn't happen every time but probably happens every one in three standing starts.

First instinct was clutch however I don't believe this to be the case, it has happened when the clutch isn't being used. In any case the clutch is brand new, as is the flywheel (recent core plug failure).

Second port of call was that it could have been power steering related. Checked the fluid level which was slightly down but the correct type. I topped it up but this hasn't made a difference at all.

As a precaution I'm planning to take off the aux belt and check the idlers and pulleys this weekend. Don't want that to fail and take my cambelt out.

For info the car is a 03 plate on 193k and drives great except for this noise.

Any ideas?

Have you looked to see if a brakedisc back plate has broken lose and rubbing on the wheel or disc?

No, it doesn't sound like that kind of noise but I will jack up both wheels at the weekend and give them a spin to see if I can feel anything.

The noise is more like a harmonic resonance type of sound. Similar to the noise house water pipes can make when not properly balanced.

EDIT: Should have read your message slower, I'll whip the wheels off and check the backing plates as well!

I have a very similar noise that comes and goes, more prevalent when turning the front wheels left or right

Sometimes I can drive for 2 hours and have nothing
Today it happend on the way skiing and then on the way home.

Road speed related, not engine speed related. You can hear it squeak loudly and appears to be wheel rotation related.

First I thought related to low power steering fluid. But all topped up and no difference.

I have since been able to stop it by bringing the car to a stop, going into Park (it's a D5 Auto) and stomping on the brakes a few times, hoping this will move the front pistons and pads into a noise-free position.

My theory is a possible stuck caliper or something in the front right brake rubbing on the brake disc.

Will be at the dealer on Wednesday next week for another issue (which in itself is an interesting story, but I'm not saying more until it is resolved) and will discuss it with them then and see if we can get it on the hoist while I am there.

I'll try and let you know why is found.

Thanks a lot, it did cross my mind that the leading edge of a pad might be coming into contact with the disc and then getting pushed back into the caliper piston. Let me know if you get to the bottom of your problem.

This is probably a coincidence however I noticed that the wheel nuts had been put on extremely tight by the mechanic who swapped my flywheel and core plug. Must have been done with a rattle gun. I've loosened them all off (extremely long bar needed) and the noise seems to happen less frequently. I will keep an eye on it and report back.

EDIT: Less frequently i.e. once in three days vs three times per journey.
