Help me to understand please.
My S60, apart from the usual foibles, has an 'extra' which I don't see the point of.
I have cruise control, great, use it all the time. I have the multi use auto gearbox, also great, rarely use the 'manual' changer....but have just discovered the sport setting (doh!). Amazing! What I don't really get is the speed limiter. Why? Most road speeds change over distances, so setting the car to say 30 only works for a while. Set it for 30 and it has to be turned off to get to 40 again. The only use I can see is for motorways, so that you don't exceed the 70 limit. But that's covered by the cruise control anyway. Anyone else have it? Do you use it, and how? Just another gimmick or useful tool? Thoughts please. |

I believe that a speed limiter is there to prevent the car speeding when going down a long hill, typically on motorways. That is how my wife's Focus works anyway. On my 2013 S80 I have just a standard cruise control. If I set it to say 75mph on a motorway it will increase from that going down a hill.

I always thought the limit function was to stop the car going above the set limit but you still control the speed via the accelerator pedal, its just you can't go fast than the limit you set.

Unlike some speed limiters the v60 (so I assume S60 as well) does not brake, but just sounds an alarm if you exceed the present speed.
Cruise control is not always suitable in a busy environment, so I use the limiter a lot in roadworks or passing through villages to aid me in not exceeding the limit. I find it an extremely useful feature. Last edited by John34077; Sep 25th, 2018 at 14:39. Reason: Typo |

It will not limit the speed , you may need to accelerate at full throttle for an emergency and you can ...

When you select drive a D shows in the dash. When you first switch to the left (gear lever to the + - side) an S shows on the dash. Sports setting.
If you then select + or - then the gear selected shows on the dash (manual selection, to an extent). In fact the speed limiter does cut the engine drive power at whatever is set. It's a little like going into limp mode or fuel starvation! You can race up to whatever speed is selected but then......nothing. Just a spongy pedal. It feels horrible and is quite disconcerting if you forget! Fortunately it all resets as soon as you turn off the engine or reset it manually. |
