Keys - where best to get them?
Hi,
I picked up a car yesterday (87 740 GL), but it only has one key, and that is a copy. Is it possible to get other keys? Even if the car is originally an import? And where is it best to go ? To volvo themselves? Also, I understand there is a seperate key for the boot, is it possible to get these? The boot is currently able to be opened from the inside, but not from the outside, I don't think it's locking but the lever isn't opening the lock. Thanks for your help, as always! |

You can get them from Volvo Dealers, but the Volvo Dealer here in Edinburgh told me just to go to a key cutting shop that does car keys.

Different keys for the boot is not the norm in my experience. It is possible that for some reason the original boot lock barrel has been changed and the key has been lost.
Short of getting a locksmith to open up and try to make a key, it might be easier to get another lock and key from a breakers yard and fit the replacement barrel.

Thanks, I'll have a look down the breakers then, do you think 'any' volvo lock will do? or will it have to be from an estate? or from a 740?

RE: Keys - where best to get them?
Another thing about different keys is that the key "purple" has is a copy, which might be a copy of the service key, this only worked the drivers door and the ignition lock, thereby allowing you to leave valuables locked in the glove box and/or boot, fairly worry free. So, if "purlpehugs" sources a replacement key from Volvo using the VIN there is a good chance it will work every lock, dependent, of course, on the tailgate lock being the original one.

oh, well I could try the glovebox and see if it works that, if not then that might be a possibility.
Will Volvo be able to order a key through VIN if it's an imported car? It was only brought over here in 2000. |

Good point about the 'copy key', Citizen.
That is more likely than a lock barrel change! Volvo should be able to supply the key from the VIN regardless of original country.

ok, will have a word with them then! Thanks for the advice, I'll try the glovebox tomorrow still though as will likely solve the 'puzzle' :D Would be handy to have a better key too.

RE: Keys - where best to get them?
Well the key I have locks and unlocks the glove box, my hubby is trying to have a look at the lock as it may be that I suppose.
When I put the key into the lock it won't go left or right but it does look old, and the lock goes 'inwards' when you try to put the key in. And the key feels sticky.. sounds funny, but its the only way I can think of describing it. At least the key does the glove box, that should indicate it's a problem with the lock if we can't get it working.. would you say!? |
