240GL 1989 Windscreen replacement.
Questions....
my windscreen has developed a vertical crack from top to bottom in the centre and will probably be an MOT failure- (can't be sure, it passed last year with a 6 inch crack starting at the top, but the MOT info suggests anything over 40mm is a no no) Haynes is totally unhelpful- says refer to specialist- but looking at the car, the fitting looks like a straight forward rubber seal and thread a piece of cord type, rather than bonded in. Can anyone confirm this or got any particular tips? I have changed a couple of screens before (on Chevettes!) without too much difficulty so I'm hoping this should be similar procedure. Anyone got one near(ish) to Oxford for less than £25 scrappy rate?? Cheers for now Chris |

RE: 240GL 1989 Windscreen replacement.
The 240 windscreens are bonded in using a primer and butyl tape.
The screen then is clamped onto the car with a special tool and tightened down to a certain depth. Spacers are used to support the lower edge of the screen away from the body. There are also different colour spacers depending on whether or not the screen is clear or tinted. The trim clips are also different colours, again, depending on clear or tinted glass. My advice, get a screen fitted professionally. |

RE: 240GL 1989 Windscreen replacement.
Thanks for prompt response (even though it's not what I wanted....).
A local firm has quoted me £85 plus vat for a replacement which sounds pretty reasonable (at least it's probably less than the car is worth) so I guess I grin and bear it. Cheers Chris |
