I phoned up to book it in (at £90+ Vat and hour!!) and said that it could possibly be a pnp switch. I then asked what it was and how much and the man on the phone had no idea what it was, he was very friendly but lacked knowledge, so I have changed my mind about sending it to them. I am trying to look for a local volvo specialist in sussex (nr brighton). I have had bad experiences with main dealers with new and used cars so prefer to use the "little guys" as you generally get a better service.

Yes, I know what you mean but the little guy is unlikely to have the diagnostic equipment to read the fault codes from this car.

I'd suggest you may be better off taking it to the dealer and ask them to read the fault codes from the engine and auto transmission at least.
Ask for the actual fault code numbers not just the description.

This should not cost more than 1/2 hours labour it will be worth it to lead you to the actual fault.
Post the fault codes here when you have them.

If you post a plea on the 2000> forum for someone near you with a PPC code reader to read the codes you maybe lucky.

How much should i be paying roughly for a secondhand ecu 24.1 unit?

I bought the car with the fault and took it to a VOC listed specialist in Lancing. He diagnosed the fault as a cracked sensor inside the gearbox housing following extensive investigation. After his really fantastic efforts I now have the car on the road and it is a really, really nice drive. Just a couple of other small things to bring up to date, a couple of small paintwork scuff replenishments, and it will be as good as the day it was registered. Also this one and my 97/T5 will now only ever, be serviced and repaired in Lancing. What a treat to find a real Volvo specialist (with Volvo 2010 diagnostics) who really knows how to repair cars.....and a proper gentleman!

If you are looking for a really great Volvo indy near Brighton try Charlwoods Volvo. They are an indy up near Crawley and are great, know their stuff and will do well by you. I used them when my 850 was having a bit of trouble and was far more impressed than I am by my local dealer.

At very least they will be able to suggest a quality auto box technician in the area.
