Aha, update.
Having NO grounds connected, its working! It was/is a dodgy DIN plug, no not my soldering but the other side to it the loom! However the sound is awful being on modest volume changing functions (source) delivers high volume "popping" in speakers, there is a constant whine and a cyclic click, click, click. This is with enging off and the key in the ACC position.
Any suggestions please?

and soldering a DIN6 to RCA, I was wondering what "amp sense" meant. I figured it should probably serve as a trigger to get the amplifier started, so I connected it to the blue-white cable from the radio, that also jumpstarts the antenna.
It works flawlessly with my new "Pioneer SPH-DA360DAB" and have connected my brodit holder to the USB on the back.
One happy victory here!

Thanks for all the info in this thread - it certainly did the trick for me.
And - for everyone believing the SC901 has the best sound; you should hear my new setup now!
