What engine? If it's the 4-cylinder/VEA then you have to leave it for at least 2 hours after engine turn off. And I have discovered that the gauge can only read either min or max with the additional words low, ok or high (never seen that last one though). About 200ml takes it from min to max.

My manual mentions that you can see that message if the car is on an incline or if the outside temperature is an issue.

Thanks for that, didn’t notice that although the vehicle is on the level and don’t think it’s to cold at the moment, was wondering if it could be down to battery as I’ve noticed in previous posts strange electrical issues showing if battery goes low?

Matthew, the electronic oil level indicator is simply an on/off switch which reads that the oil is full or gives no reading at all.

Your car is simply sitting somewhere between the level required to give a full reading, and the level required to generate the add 0.5l of oil warning level.

Short of plugging in a VIDA diagnostic tool or similar you will be guessing as to the level of your oil.

For peace of mind you can start adding small quantities of oil (no more than 100ml at a time) until you get a reading on the electronic oil level indicator, or you can wait til the car gives you the add 0.5l of oil warning, or alternatively pay a small fortune for a volvo garage to diagnose a fault

Enter the car and don't touch any pedals. Press the Start/Stop button for at least 3 seconds and then go into the menu. Now you'll be able to see the level.

The free Car Scanner app (used with a cheap ELM327 OBD2 adaptor) will give the oil level sensor value (in mm) when correctly configured. Works well on mine and also gives DPF sensor data plus loading values for both soot and ash (in grams).

Personally I wouldn't add oil unless I absolutely knew it was needed.

The OP has an odd problem, as he's clearly able to select 'oil level' from the menu (which is the icon that's greyed out when unavailable) and so he can bring up the gauge, but then the gauge isn't working. While I've had the greyed-out icon problem several times, every time I've got past that step then the gauge has been functional (even if it is crap). Perhaps this IS a sensor fault, in which case presumably the 'add 0.5L' warning messages won't work either?

Thanks Zebster, I charged battery yesterday, now the oil level indicator is showing “Add 0.5 Lts” possibly just coincidental, anyway intend to add a little oil tomorrow and see how that works.
Thanks all who posted.
