Default Gearbox oil change

Question I have a xc60 d3 rdesign with 1410000 on the clock . Does anyone think that the oil is ok or to replace it .and what type of oil does it need and how much needed to go in. And also does the gearbox need to be reset.

Some will say no, 'fill for life' some will say yes, it will benefit the gearbox.
Fill for life does not actually mean forever, it means for a projected lifespan of the vehicle and/or box which is treated as a replaceable exchange component like an alternator, yet a very expensive and labour intensive exchange!!
Gearboxes are sealed from dirt but the oil DOES oxidise and lose its properties (this is fact not opinion).
It is best practice to change gearbox oil every 75k.
At 140k it will be worth changing it if you wish to prolong the service life and help improve shifting and economy. Changing costs little and can only give benefits.
Decision is yours at the end of the day which way you want to go.

Not sure whether you are manual or auto but either way I would get that oil/fluid changed. I change my Autobox fluid as recommended by Volvo (for towing duty) every second year which works out every 40K on my annual mileage.
I reckon your fluid/oil is pretty much shot if it has never been changed with that sort of mileage in my view. The 'sealed for life' phrase is one of those myths probably dreamt up by salesmen rather than engineers and I don't believe even Volvo claim that. As good as oil tech now is I would get it changed.

Sadly, 'fill for life' is a thing, and long established. Even as far back as the '80s vauxhall boxes were 'fill for life' and any high mileage vehicles needing a change involved removing the oil pan to drain and iirc refilling by removing one of the bolts (not meant for refilling) on the side of the box.
My wifes octavia is 'filled for life' and at 177k was graunching 1st-2nd when hot, the oil came out dark brown and sticky (see pic), new oil and its like a new box, literally.

I have a D3 auto (owned since Aug 2019) and mine was doing the 'clonk' when moving from reverse to drive when hot (e.g. after a run). It cost £250 to have it done at a Volvo specialist, which included the software 'reset'. At that mileage I would get it done anyway. Mine was done at 100k. It still occasionally clonks but it is smoother than it was.

It will only benefit your gearbox. I recently changed mine (V60 D5 Auto) and it made the world of difference. No hard downshifts and no clonking between R and D. I would contact Volvo and shop around for the best price.
