D-Type Overdrive Repair/Exchange
I had a D-type retro-fitted to my 1966 121 a few years ago. Worked perfectly for years and then recently it ate itself.
There are a few exchange units around for other models - is the Laycock D type a standard unit, so could I replace mine with a refurb from an MGB? And if not, any advice on sourcing a replacement would be appreciated. |

Hi,
I had my overdrive reconditioned at overdrive repair services in Sheffield. The owner and his son both worked at Laycock Engineering in Sheffield up to it closing. The overdrives were originally made there. Having them reconditioned is not cheap. The units on Amazons give a 32% reduction. Other cars were fitted with 27% reduction. I do not think an MGb unit will fit on an Amazon gearbox, though someone else may prove me wrong! |

I've had mine done by Overdrive Spares of Rugby, £400 last year.

sixeye;
I expect the internals of one Laycock D-type to be the same...probably even the case, but the interface to M41 flange definitely not, so that's where similarities end...short answer...I don't know, but I recommend you remove your M41/OD (which it sounds like it needs to be for repair or replacement anyway), separate the two, inspect the two ODs for similarity/differences, then you can answer the question for all of us! Cheers |

I have swapped overdrives between various cars, such as 28% Rover A type unit onto a Swallow Doretti, also A type but 25%. The adaptor plate onto the Volvo gearbox is unique and the rear part of the casing will need to be matched to or adapted to fit the Volvo gearbox mounting, obviously D type to D type. I am planning to fit a J type overdrive to my PV 544.
