Maps Paul? Sounds like that should be on the 'How do we know were getting on a bit page' I do love a good map,my favourite is the Michelin maps, in my opinion can't be beaten for Africa. Strange thing, my better half can't understand maps, gets annoyed if I (often) try to explain. A good map of an area you don't know, is like a book for me. I know,I am a bit weird!

Regards,Keith.

For me it's OS maps prefferably 1:50,000. Big enough to give an overall view, detailed enough to call the road when sat in the navigators seat.

Every vehicle I drive has an up to date road atlas in it, even the works van. Gives a sence of the area that sat nav never can. Once into an area it's the OS maps for the back roads and getting around the jams.

We used to go out as a family and the kids would take it in turns to call right or left at junctions. Just to see where we ended up, ( often in a farm yard) then the relevant OS map was passed to the back and they were told to find where we were and plot a route home.
They became surprisingly good at it and even today both daughters that drive preffer map to sat nav.

Paul.

That reminds me of my 3 nephews Paul, there they were sitting in the back seat of the Cortina, " How far to x asks I", long silence......... " about three quarters of an inch" came the reply!

Sorry to be contrary, but my experience differs!
Having had the compass on a couple of cars from new, when I bought a used 2008 XC70 without compass, I took a chance with a second-hand compass mirror from ebay which my dealer fitted in 10 mins - and it just worked - plug & play!
They said nothing about software or matching to the car’s systems etc - plus it was only £60 + £20 fitting - better than c.£400 for a new one...
