Default What is this noise? Clutch Chatter?

Hi All,

The D5 has just hit 198k miles. It’s an 2005 with no documents hinting it has ever had a clutch change. I’m finding that when cold, when you raise your foot up on the clutch at biting point it makes a chattery sound. Once the car is warm it quiets down to a point you’d only hear it outside the car if you listened very carefully.

No clutch slippage, doesn’t matter if your in gear or neutral. No sound once moved off. It’s simply when on the biting point. Video below shows the sound. Please note the sound it coming and going as I’m pumping the pedal. Any ideas?

Dmf but dont be overly concerned for now, they are known to go on for a long time like that without any actual issue other than the noise.
Just keep your eye on it, if it gets much worse then it needs doing before it explodes.
Mine chatters whilst warming up, though not all the time, it varies, can be real loud or not a peep, has been like this for 10,000+ miles so far with no change in behaviour, just done 500 miles fully laden with family and camping stuff.
Somebody on here or voc forum recently said to me his had been the same for something like 60-80k!
Yours does sound much more 'Bangy' than mine though, mines more like someone shaking a can of spray paint inside a bucket, hitting the sides whilst the ball rattles in the can...

Yes!
They get worn and rattle. Some can fall apart/explode shortly after noise is apparent, the volvo D5 ones are reputed to just get noisy but carry-on.

Our '06 S80 is at the "rattle can in a bucket" stage & has been since we bought the car over 10k miles ago with no change in the sound. Yours does sound more "bangy" though, good practice would suggest checking it out/changing but it's likely OK.
