Dave, my comment was referenced to Cassel's method, and just that, a comment. The large countersunk screws are usually very hard to remove, so I would just add, pick which method is easiest.

Please accept my apologies Derek and didn't read Pauls post. (Cassell)
Pauls a good friend of mine, but having had the doors off mine during restoration that many times I had nightmares.
However I would always remove the door from the door side of the hinge.

There is literally inches of adjustment If it's done body side .
The shims can also work there way out too when the long bolts are tightened .

Back again with an update. Found the RHS earth lead screwed to the car body. And the LHS sticking out of the loom randomly. Connected them to the door jamb switch wires and booth interior lights worked fine with opening doors.

BUT... RHS light would not switch on manually by lifting the light lens, rather it caused the fuse to blow. A bit of head-scratching and a cup of tea and I realise that the light must have been wired backwards, with the earth and positive leads switched when the car was (poorly) reassembled after its bare shell respray. Switched them over and all ok.

A small victory for the little guy..,
