D24T cold start advance
Hi all,
Hope everyone is doing well in these challenging times but everyone here has a common interest that we may use to our benefit.....even as a time out in family life. Ive owned 4 different D24T 740 / 940 's and all have suffered from ok to bad starting. Lately as in last year.....I've bought a 92K 740 TD and replaced timming belt and timed up the injection pump doing both properly with Volvo/VW tools. The 740 TD still had traditional lumpy starting and I've fitted a new cold start advance wax stat......Ebay no. 254496728181 with description "BOSCH Thermostat, cold start enrichment 1 467 202 302" for £35.35 .....the difference is night and day!...the car starting in the cold.....perfectly with stable tickover and increased RPM.... couldn't recommend it enough. Take care, Brian.

Fitting of the wax stat
Hi,
Yes it's a bit of a pig but trust me it's worth it! I removed the alloy casing, put it into a vise....gripping the lower section not too tight. I used the end of a crowbar, its hardened steel and was perfect width to fit in the slot. To rotate the crowbar I used a adjustable spanner and it unscrew with a bit of force. It saves buying a the tool.....later I will measure the end of the crowbar to give indication of size.

Replacing cold start device
Quote:
Sorry for the slow reply, I've completed the one on my 740 TD but I've an opportunity to replace the wax stat on my 940, so I will take pictures of how I do it. I will email them as requested but for some reason I can't upload picture that I've taken from my phone!?

I've also had 4 to date and only one of them has had a correctly working cold start device. I've never been that worried as even in the coldest weather and with not all 6 glow plugs working they've always started - albeit a bit smokey and lumpy to begin with but it soon goes away!! But like you say, when it is working it does make a big difference. And for that money it's a bargain. |

Did mine when I started running veg oil. It was awful before!! Would literally just chug once and cut out again. About 10 tries to stay running.
Now always starts even -10c and 50% veg oil.
