Engine movement

Hey all,
I've got a problem with the V70 tdi,

There has been quite a bit of movement in the Engine, like a swinging movement when turning the osf wheel. Its done this for a little while, with no noticable vibration etc, so...
I replaced the lower two (front and back) engine mounts last month (thinking this would cure it) the torque bar at the lower front is tight, the mount under the pulley is about 2 years old (12k miles).

There is a vibration that presents itself when turning left, ie loading the right hand side of the car. It is not a cv joint "click" more of a grumble.

I am thinking it is either the inner cv joint - partially siezed. Or the pulley mount is too soft.
The driveshaft isn't that old, a new replacement (not volvo) (maybe 2 years old again)

It looks as though the driveshaft is sitting away from that curved engine bracket and the inner CV is possibly making contact with the subframe as a result. Check to see if the C shaped part of the bracket is intact. It clamps the driveshaft bearing to the engine bracket with two screws.

That inner CV joint doesn't look aligned properly, that's the first thing I'd look at.

Well it looks like the c-clamp is in place, holding the bearing correctly (I think!) the shaft is also fully engaged with the gbox/diff.

The pictures are showing the car jacked up, ie full "droop"

I'm of course doing negligable miles at the moment (even less having had a look at whats going on here!), but if I can get to my workshop tomorrow then I'll try pull the driveshaft for a closer look.
It does look like that inner cv joint is dislocated somehow.

Looking at the second photo, the inner CV joint is definitely out of line. The outer joint looks correctly aligned and the inner should look similar. I think you will find that the joint cage has collapsed.

Well, new driveshaft ordered, recieved and installed.. and....

No difference at all,
infact it might be marginally worse, the new shaft is seated properly in the support bearing clamp, and into the diff.

The movement is still present, plus a bit more noise.

In a straight line it is as smooth as normal, it turns well and fairly smooth, but the slightest compression on the suspension when driving and its really not happy!

In that corner it is essentially new meyle parts, except for strut top bearing. Its tracked up and aligned nicely, stops and goes straight and true.

Not sure where to go now!

Hi Pyro

That's terrible news!

At the moment I can't think what might be going on.

But just to give me something to think about:
Is this car auto or manual?
When you are turning the wheel in the youtube video, is the gearbox in gear?
Was the other wheel off the ground?
If the other wheel is up, when you turn it, does the "bad" wheel still have that movement?
Did you replace the whole shaft with both joints? (And where did you buy it in the end)?
How many miles on the car?
Did the problem start suddenly, or did it develop?
Can you jack that wheel off the ground but get the driveshaft at a more horizontal angle (by jacking the control arm). Does that make any difference?

Hey, Steve, thanks for your reply,

The car is a manual

it was out of gear with just one side jacked up, I shall jack the whole front end up tomorrow and give them a spin, see what happens!

I replaced the whole shaft, it came from j&r cv joints a whole new shaft, checked the dimensions and it was spot on

198k miles

Ill try line things up on jacks tomorrow and see how it looks and feels.

The engine movement problem has existed for a little while, but i assumed because the engine mounts were knacked the whole lump was just a bit loose. So I'm thinking that with the sured up engine its pronounced the problem. I will quadruple check that the engine mounts are located correctly!

My inital thoughts are that the lower control arm is wrong, its a meyle part, but I seem to remember it was an ar!se to fit, even more than normal.
That engine mount under the pulley is soft (Despite being under 2 years old)

It does feel like the drive shaft is too long - I had a similar noise on a pug 206 when i got the wrong shaft delivered, the incorrect shaft was 1" longer so was loading the cvs under compression.

If there is a vacuum leak, the mount may sit too high or low.
