brake callipers and hoses

hi all
im looking at having my front brake callipers refurbishished possibley BIGG RED
i have had calliper off but cant release hose at copper end at moment does any one know the copper fitting kit i need in case i break something at that end

I have a couple of the copper fittings in my garage if you break anything.

Hiya Jim sorry I think I may have gotten a bit confused. I was thinking of the adaptor or extension fitting which goes in to the caliper. As for the union on the actual hard brake pipe. The pipe is probably 3/16 and the union is most likely m10x1 or 3/8 UNF.

If it is any help the last time I had this problem was on the n/s on my '90 745 when the connector had been put on at the factory with a crossed thread and there was no way other than eventual destruction that I could free it.

I seem to recall that the pipe was 3/16 and the union 3/8 UNF.

Fortunately, I had a local Factor who made up new pipes on site. I disconnected the length of pipe and measured it with a piece of string and also took it to the Factor who made up a new straight length with the correct unions while I waited.

All I had to do was bend it very, very gently between my fingers and thumbs to the required old pattern shape without damaging it!

Maybe you can find someone locally who makes up new pipe lengths.

hi all
i have purchased the 2 front callipers from " parts for volvo" northampton
ive fitted one side today and will tackle the other tomorrow . one thing !
no way can i release the brake hose at the copper end i have tried lots of plus gas releasing oil and have used a gas torch to heat the copper nut but it will not budge 25 years probley welded into the steel female hose end !
have any of you guys had success with this job as i have new brake hoses ready to go on .
ive read the forum maintenance on this issue too .
the only way out is to let the garage do it unless some one can help !

hi all again
i have just found a bulletin by IPD they have some good tutorials on tube
on our series volvo . the bulletin is quite in depth on my problem it may be beyond me as i need brake pipe flaring tools >!

I found mine needed penetrating fluid and a lot of heat. I think I then used mole grips to grip the copper ferrule while unscrewing the flexible hose, as I found my 11mm brake pipe spanners wouldn't do the job. It wasn't a pleasant job, but was possible to do it without destroying it.

You can buy a brake pipe flaring kit for £11 on eBay, I've a similar one and while it's not perfect (you occasionally need a few goes at getting the flare right) it's not bad value for money... Just make sure you read the instructions, I'm pretty sure Volvos have a double flare.

I've also used mine on PAS hard lines for my 340 and it worked OK on the larger pipe, but not as easy as brake pipe.

For the flares if the flare is for a Male union you need to make it look like a ball on the end and if a female one it needs to look like a cup. The idea is when the Male and female unions are tightened up together the ball fits inside the cup and squashes on to it making the seal.
