I was always under the impression they were the black plastic finish as originally made, wasn't aware they did colour coded versions.
That said, egg-crate grilles have never appealed to me so in all honesty i haven't taken that much notice.

I painted mine with satin black from Halfords. Rubbed down first bit of primer and good to go.

They are surprisingly far from black. I once painted one in a dark "charcoal" colour and it was still darker than the OE colour.

Especially black - it's a fugitive colour in plastic and ends up pale grey. Hence the trend of grey bumpers on new cars in the 80s, they were meant to fade less so maintaining their "new" look longer. In theory anyway!

I remember my 940 one definitely had a coating on it, it even had a tiny bit of metallic flake.
But now that I think about it, the early 740 turbo grille (which is the type I'm restoring) is likely different. It does look a bit faded so maybe you're right about it being black plastic.

I looked at one on Skandix a few years ago when someone asked me something about them. What i found on there suggested they were all natural finish black plastic which is pretty akin to Satin Black.

Plastidip is a rubber based paint that can be peeled off apparently so may last longer, i'd go for a decent plastic primer and satin black if i was doing one but we're all different.

Has the rear of the grille faded, much? Is that colour any clue?
