Thank you, Stephen, very useful information.

I did have a quick look a couple of days ago for the earth connection and couldn't locate it, going to have another try shortly. The problem is that domestic/family issues, or else weather, have got in the way, the car has just been used and used, and consequently neglected.

As for the headlights, I located some reflectors, non-OEM, for about half the price of OEM, so I'll probably get those anyway. I've searched repeatedly for complete headlight units, which would be the ideal as I could just leave them at the garage to fit reflectors. So far I've been unlucky, I've enquired about headlights when I've seen cars being broken but they've already been sold, not surprisingly! Putting Plus-Gas on the bolts seems and excellent idea, I'm just hoping that the reflectors are ok for MoT, the lights are satisfactory for driving at present, so fingers crossed.

Thanks again for helpful information.

Thanks for the various replies. In the end it turned out to be the pump itself so as time was short they fitted a non-standard replacement - as the mechanic said, 'It's not very pretty but it does the job'! I've not looked yet but it certainly works very effectively, much better than the original. I think the rear pump, bought at the same time, must also be faulty but they didn't bother with that this time.

Hello Angie.

I am pleased the screen washers are working. I regret that I "do not have confidence" that it was a pump failure. I think that the narrative does not add up.

My perspicacious straight talking scientist wife totally agrees with me re this.

To begin: For one pump to fail is unfortunate, as Lady Bracknell might say ....

nuf said.

Regards to you as always
Stephen
