Default Fuel Consumption XC90 185 2010

Done 2,000 miles since we got car in October. Fuel consumption is ave. 26-28 mpg which is pretty dire. Does it get any better? Would the polestar upgrade improve the MPG?

Mine is a similar age/mileage to yours and is auto as well. Getting circa 29-31 Not had it on a motorway yet. Taking it to Carlisle dealer Tuesday for 1st service. My previous XC70 used to get about 34 when new and improved to around 45 as it "matured".

I have a MY2008 (185 bhp) D5 auto with approx 35k mls. I mainly use the car in town/backroads and average around 24-25mpg.
On a motorway run at round 80mph i average 31-32mpg.
I'm not usually on an economy run and am usually the first one away at the traffic lights, but based on this your consumption looks very normal to me

I had similiar experiences. Ive now got 14k on the clock and shes reading 28 at the moment. But its dead of winter and they add additive to the diesel to stop it geling so that must have a negative effect. So by summer i expect it to be around 30. Remaps are meant to improve efficiency. Im told the D5 is a really tight engine out of the factory. The worst thing you can do is baby the engine as it breaks in. Drive the engine hard, grin and bear it. In the long term it will work out better.

Meant to say earlier, when I mentioned Polestar to Direct Line, they immediately pulled down the proverbial shutters and refused my business. I did not get the mod done and they insured me fully comp for around £230.

Your economy is slightly better than mine and your driving style sounds similar to mine with most of my journeys very short in town . I'm wondering if the dpf makes consumption worse . Although it would be nice for better consumption figures for a big car personally I don't think it's too bad and having run many big cars over the years I'm used to these sort of figures .

I have dpf as well and certainly looks like the older 163 bhp engines seem to get better fuel economy. My past 2 cars have been people carriers and fuel consumption was only a little better than the XC...

..yep I have a 163 (manual) and I've never had figures this low. I know the display reading is optimistic - but assuming it's consistently optimistic then it becomes reletive. Out and about round town/school run it'll show 36-38 ( so I assume this to be somewhere around the 32/33ish in reality - sorry I've never done a brim to brim).
On a run it will easily show over 40 with a light foot. At more progressive speeds - 38-39 without fail - so applying similar optimism I assume it'll be somewhere around mid 30's or more.
This very last week in fact - between Bicester and Manchester return trip (pretty much motorway for 95% of the journey) my Wife achieved a displayed 48mpg - I think she must have been slipstreaming trucks all the way ??. I did the same journey again this weekend and it showed 39.....it took me at least an hour less each direction though :-) !
Considering the sheer size of the vehicle though even 30 is pretty impressive I think.

Cheers
Ian.

It may be a help to quote your average speed readout with the MPG figures as it is just as important ..

I can only dream of the figures Ian is mentioning, but because I do fairly low annual mileage am not that bothered about it. My wife drives up and down to Slough 3 - 4 times a week from Redditch hence the C30 Drive and averages a nice high 50 to low 60 mpg and I know she ignores speedlimits...

My average speed is somewhere low 30mph
