Glow Plug removal
Well after nearly a year the car being off the road, (MOT and other bits needed) she is back working. Cost a bit to get through the MOT (Welding, brake pipes and service).
Got through but the battery failed 5 days after that. Seems like a cell or two had packed. Considering the battery was only 10 months old I was annoyed but not able to get a warranty replacement as Unipart has gone to the wall and it was one of theres. Checked the glow plugs as a bit slow to start and only 1 glow plug working. I have now replaced 2 with no problems ( the easiest ones). Needed to work a bit more on the next one in line, think it was still the original one as I needed to saw the threaded end off to get enough room to remove it. Took nearly 2 hrs to replace this one. But struggling with the last one nearest the cam belt. Can get a spanner on it but not enough space to get leverage to actually turn it. Not enough space to use a ratchet and even my offset spanner can not turn. I have had a thought this evening about it and but removing one of the injector feed pipes I might be able to get enough to work on it. My question is about risk if I remove it or will I have to try another route. Thanks. |

Hi Andy,
I have previously changed my glow plugs on two occasions and know how long-winded the whole procedure can be. The last time I think I managed to get an open-ended spanner in at a very steep angle to move the difficult ones a tiny bit at a time, but I remember thinking that a "swan-neck" type of spanner would probably have worked better, if I had one! Either way, I'm pretty sure I managed it without having to dismantle any pipes. Patience and perseverance in abundance is undoubtedly needed! Hope this helps, Cheers, Peter. |

Thanks Peter.
Going to look for another spanner may be a shorter one that I use with another to get another leverage. Just need a day thats slightly warmer or drier than the last few weekends. |
