'11 V50 D2 R Design yey or ney
Hi
Been looking through forum as I'm considering buying an 11 plate D2 R design demo from local dealer. Spec is what I'm looking for but I'm a bit wary of the D2 engine. Is it as underpowered as the forum hints ? Test driving it Monday but any thoughts welcome. Oh I currently drive a 1.8 TDCi Focus. |

I think the D5 is the better engine but someone else will confirm or refute this.

Check if the D2 and the Ecodrive run the same engine....
one is a 2 valve running 34psi boost! and not as good as the other one, running 4 valves and less boost. It'll be fairly reasonable with a remap if it's the 4 valve version. |

The D2 has only 2 valves... I drove one from a friend... It is very rough for a diesel. It is quiet though...

115 hp is just that. But it is a lot quicker and faster than my Mondeo 2.0 TDCi with the same claimed power, albeit it had a 5-tronic box wich likely robbed some performance. According to both tacho and speedo my did 195 kph / 121 mph, a speed it reached quickly and then went into a wall - I don't think it could go a tenth faster.
Mine have the running issues described previously. |

No. I'd say that the D2 is not underpowerd. I had a C30 SS for the day when my drive 16v was in for service.
This engine feels a lot different to my 16v 109bhp 1.6. A lot quicker off the mark with better pulling right through the rev range. It does go pretty well I'd say, although not like the D3, similar in characteristics but with less power. That said, I would not swap my older drive for a newer one at present. Reason, fuel economy was terrible. Over 80 miles of cross country driving I struggled to get more than 58mpg average, with figure hitting 61.8mpg for a short time. I know that my car would have been about 10mpg better for the same journey. Problem I think is the ecu. I could hear that the engine was being overfueled regularly, as the slightest squeeze of the throtle made the engine more noisy and computer instantaneous figure was very low. It was also very hard to drive smoothly, with engine hunting at about 1500 rpm. It's a shame as the car is noticeably quicker than the older engine. |

I`ve got a 2011 C30 D2, when its warmed up it goes really well, never gonna set the world alight but I`m more than happy with it. When it cold, first thing in the morning its a bit of a pig, feels like my lawnmower has more power but soon warms up.
Just got back from doing a Devon trip and real life fuel figure of 58mpg with 70mph on motorways, well pleased. |

Personally I'd say the V50 is too big a car for the D2 engine, and I'd look out for the bigger ones, at least the 2.0

Well so far all well. None of the rough running problems I've read about. Done about 800m so far, had a few good fast A road journeys and suddenly engine seemed to get a new spring in its step. Fuel economy seems a bit disappointing, got to work out figures properly, lovely drive though.
