Default V40 Overcooling

Hi, We have a Volvo V40 1.8 petrol 2001, with an overcooling problem. Tested thermostat which seems to be working ok. Any suggestions as to what I should look for next?

Default V40 Overcooling

Bit more info...

It only seems to get to the normal running temp & rpm when it is left to tick over (temp half way, 750rpm).

But.. on start up and whilst driving the idel is up at about 1100rpm and the temp gauge is down to only 2 lines up.

Any advice would be a great help!

Replace the thermostat as that is almost guaranteed to be the problem and at £5ish its a cheap fix.

It could be a faulty temp sensor, did you take it out and check it over when you had the stat out?

Gary.

How did you test it?
If you used the hot water method it is not conclusive proof that the stat is ok.

As stated before just change the thermostat. Not a big job and cheap to boot. And, you will find that this forum sectiion is for the newer S40 and V50 and others as well. The V40 section is just a tad above this one. In there you will find how to change the stat and lots of other info. Okay.

Is the electric radiator cooling fan staying on or are you perhaps just getting a faulty reading from the temperature guage?
