Unhappy Camshaft confusion

My engine blew - http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=258608 - another story.

So I ordered a replacement engine from ACD Volvo Breakers after they assured me they checked it out and it would fit. It's taken the garage who are fitting the engine a while to work out why it would start but not properly... everything on the outside looks the same. It turns out the camshaft I had in the original engine superseded the one in the replacement engine (i.e. original was newer).
My original shaft has part number 31216227
The replacement shaft has part number 30731132

See photos here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-...GpxNVRyWFJHZUE

Unfortunately the originals were damaged by the blown engine, so we can't lift them out and replace the older ones. The only available 31216227's are in Sweden (5d lead time), £373.20 each.

I'm no engine guru so not sure the exact reason this won't work but it doesn't work properly (the engine runs but it doesn't start easily?). Can anyone comment on these questions:
  1. What would your approach be to the breaker and what would you expect from them?
  2. Can Volvo reprogram my ECU to accept the replacement engine with its camshafts, or is that not possible?
  3. Is there a solution I'm not thinking of, other than replaceing the cams? The garage has expressed that removing the engine is going to take a much longer time than replacing them.

I have been unable to speak to ACD today but have emailed them the issue and asked them if they can supply the camshafts free of charge as it was their error. Hmmmm.

Beginning to believe that Volvo is my Friday 13th.

Talking about replacement engines without a mention of engine codes could get confusing so what are the D5 engine codes for your original engine and the replacement engine?

They'll be D5244T? or D5244T??

Maybe someone knows how to find this out, I'd need to check it with the garage I suppose.

Your original will be easy to work out as you just need digits 6 and 7 from your 17 digit chassis number.

The "new" engine will hopefully still have it printed on the timing belt cover.

@cheshired5:

The VIN is: *****71*********
The original engine number is: 692707

Let me know if that helps?

Your original engine is a D5244T4 so the first thing to check is whether the same D5 code is on the timing cover of the new engine.

If the breaker you bought the engine from was one that deals specifically in Volvo engines they should have known this. So yes, I think you have recourse with them.

To be honest, I've never heard of a D5244T3
Hopefully someone can enlighten us.

No matter.
Trying to start an engine using an ECM from a different version isn't going to work.
