My previous volvo ran 5w30 up till 188,000 when I sold it. Your handbook has all the grade oils your Volvo should take, if it's not in there don't use it.

Call in your nearest volvo garage, I'm sure they would give you a print out. If I remember correctly that engine took a number of oil grades.
My local volvo is also really cheap for oil (0w30 castrol edge) about £24 with vat for 4 litres. I'm sure your dealer would be similarly priced on oils. 1 litre bottles are still expensive so buy 2x 4 litres and have some left for next time.
My dealer also let's you register for discount at parts area, get discount on most things, service items are the best discount, sometimes even cheaper then local parts stores even with the promotional discounts.

Euro 3 or 4? (Black or silver engine cover?)

Euro 3 (black cover) 0w30 A3/B4 original spec, very rare oil, other grades listed in handbook are 0w40, 5w30, 5w40 A3/B4. If engine is quiet and as it should be 0w40 would be better. I have just purchased Fuchs Titan Supersyn Longlife 0w40 for mine Fwiw, lots of people use Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 and this is the best 5w40 for these engines as it is closer to a 0w40/5w30 than the other 5w40's and it is inexpensive too whilst fundamentally being a very good oil.
If engine is rattly, stick some Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5w40 in.
If you look here https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=283503 there is a list of the most appropriate oils that are readily available.

For Euro 4 (Silver cover) 0w30 A5/B5, can use 5w30 A5/B5 too. Ensure its high quality from a known name.

No problem, btw, Opieoils.co.uk currently have 15% off orders over £75 inc free shipping! 👍
There is a volvo discount code all the time anyway for 10%, think iirc its VOLVO10

I like to experiment.

My 245 GL 1989 2 ltr CI/LPG run from 150k to 500k on Amsoil 0-30.

Using by pass filters and oil analysis I could run up 150k with out an oil change.

The analysis would pick up over fuelling and water leaks and all sorts of reports on all reasonable metal wear. I made a spread sheet for the period. Its on the 240 site somewhere.

Great fun.

It was loosing power to pull a large caravan but having had it stripped down you could just feel the ridge at the top of the bore, and it was still in spec. on the cylinder pressures.

It has a 2.3 now and wow does it go!
