I still don't agree regarding the overdrive switch on the lid. I presume the overdrive is set up the same on an 1800s as an amazon saloon. I have had the overdrive gearbox to bits on my amazon and ended up having to pull it totaly apart as bearings and shims fell everywhere but that is another story I wish to forget. Anyway the switch on the gearbox lid is operated when the rod inside the box for fourth gear is pushed forward and the sprung loaded switch is pushed up making the contact. As soon as you come out of fourth the rod comes off the switch and overdrive is disingaged. So it is impossible for the overdrive to be still engaged when you select reverse, so there is no need for a switch to dissingage it. On the amazon there is only one switch and that is what that switch does. However I have an 1800s overdrive and gearbox sat on my garage floor and that has two switches on the lid, which I presume is for third gear, but if one swith is for disingagement then why does the amazon only have one switch which is definately for engagement only.

Yep. I have read the posts properley now. I got the impression in the earlier thread that the switch was used to disingage. My fault for not reading properly. I could have saved myself ten minutes typing.

Default hairyapple sez even newer plan(or plan C)

OKAY so I buy a tranny with the J OD on it which may or may not be any good....should I pay the asking price of $650 for the professionally rebuilt and lovely J OD on eBay and just make the swap or do I attempt a total rebuild of the questionable OD I already own?????????????Lets leave the questionable tranny out of it for now. On a scale of 10 the level of difficulty? Special tools? Stress level?

Can you define "questionable"? FWIW I've had a D apart and replaced all the bearings and it was no big deal.

As my caption at the bottom says: There is no such thing as an easy job. Remember your gearbox could cost you your life if you get it wrong!

Default hairyapple sez definition of questionable

Questionable means in this instance, I buy a trans w/ J type OD that has no provenance other than what the person selling it has to say about it. Basically I wouldn't go through the trouble of installing this unit on positive sales talk alone. I hate dissapointment especially at midnight on a lonely road in Maine.

I am probably a better than average mechanic and have had apart and rebuilt a transmission from my old CJ5 Jeep, a fairly simple task. Any other suggestions?

Take the overdrive you have to pieces. The main bearings are standard, its rare for the cone clutch to wear beyond redemption. Have a good feel of the planetary gears, the Torrington bearings can fail, stick in new O rings and gaskets and usually the job is a good un

If its toast all you've lost is a few hours and you'll win some experience.
