Thanks to all. I have it booked in with MGR Volvo in Chippenham on Tues.
I just did a short 3 miles drive and when I checked the tyres the insides were very warm and the rest of the tyre was cold. This definitely points towards the wheels being out of alignment etc as the tyres are scrubbing on the insides whilst it looks like the centre and outer are barely in contact with the road.

If this is not adjustable then surely it must be a design fault. What other cars do you know that trash the insides of tyres and for a mechanic to tell you that you just have to live with it? I will see what MGR Volvo say and if they say its OK then a stiff letter to Volvo UK could be in order!

All fixed. It was the rear wheel bearing; I'm rather pi$$ed off as 2 garages over the year I have been driving with the wretched noise have both said that the wheel bearings were fine and that it was tyre noise. To$$ers!!

The moral here is to stick to your guns and get a proper check done. I can't believe I was driving that car and getting so vexed with the noise all last year when a simple £240 session would have fixed it.

So much for Volvo reliability and service again. Shocking.

Was it MRG that found the problem?
