new engine T5 old computer T5-R
I recently had to change the engine in my 850 T5-R (1995, 250 000 km).
On my volvo servis's advice I put an used T5 engine and use the old ECU from T5-R. The servis claimed the engine performance should be the same, but: - when running the engine without throttle the rotation of the engine is going litle up and down - on emission test i got to much CO2 - at first I got some problems when starting warm engine, after one day and few km on the highway this seems better I haven't go to the full speed yet, so I don't know if the performance is the same. The questions are: - is the problem from using ECU not from the same engine - is the new (used) engine faulty - are there some other problems, it's just the second day after I got my car back I can get a ECU from the T5 but I do not want that. ps: i'm not english native speaker so sorry for language errors |

from memory the t5r engine is NOT the same as a t5 one and if you swapped the engine complete with the turbo's these are also different.

A vacume leak or faulty idle control valve could be causing the idle fluctuation.
I'd try and pull the fault codes. Does your car have a diagnostic point under the bonnet next to he washer filler cap? Otherwise you'll need to visit a garage with a fault code reader. I think your car should work be OK. One thing comes to mind though. Are the injectors the same size on old and new engines? Simon |

RE: new engine T5 old computer T5-R
than you for your help
1. diagnostic point is there 2. at the end of the day the lamp for lambda sonda lighted up on control panel (so there are maybe problems with some sensors ???) I will go to garage whre the engine was mounted, to verify the fault codes and I will also ask them about injectors |

Hi.
The 850 T-5 and T-5R engines are the 'same'. i.e. same capacity, compression etc etc. Only the ECU program is different with the R ECU having a 30 seconds overboost function. to give 240BHP for that length of time, but with base power being 225BHP. Turbos are also both 15G units. Dan. |

That's the full production R models, (850R) as they use 16T turbos and have 240bhp all the time.
