Of all the stuff that's been mentioned the only other thing I can think of (from experience with my 1996 960) is to carefully examine the top hose plastic radiator stub for any signs of cracking/minor seepage. The top radiator stub on these cars is prone to failure but there is usually some visual warning. If all looks OK you will be good for 1000+ miles.

When I took our 850R on a Scottish excursion last year (or was it the year before lol), I just did a fluids check/top up as pretty much everything else had been renewed as part of my stage 1 servicing.

Having said that, I did end up replacing the rear nivomats the day before departure as one side was starting to drop a little - and I thought a long journey over hilly, bumpy roads while fully laden probably wasn't a good idea if they're starting to go. With those replaced we had a trouble free and thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

I'd second the suggestion to check the radiator top hose connection, and also where the end tanks are 'pinched' onto the heat exchanger/core - thats where my 940 radiator started to leak. Its a straightforward job on the 960 - the same as my 940 which I swapped out a few months ago.

You'll be fine, afterall you're not even leaving the UK, so worst case scenario you end up with a hire car and the 960 gets a lift home. Go enjoy the journey, Scotland is a beautiful country - we'll probably be going back next year.

As you can see by my signature I would take my V70 D5. Fantastic seats,215bhp and I'll probably get double the mpg compared to my two old Volvo's. I've owned since new in 2012 so it's very well maintained

Driven from Bournemouth to Glasgow in one go without even a stop for fuel

Check on the timing belt history and replace as required.

I'm paranoid about them breaking unless you have a non interference engine....

Me too! In fact when I bought my 850R I dare not drive it until I'd changed the timing belt. Fortunately the red block engines (except for the 2.3 16v) are all non interference, so its just inconvenient if the belt snaps. Good call though.

Unless it's a B200 N/A as they're interference due to domed piston crown

I was bit dubious about taking my 299000 miles 1995 volvo diesel to Ireland so put some spare parts in the car then took them back off I've driven 250000 miles in this car so it proved I was mythering about nothing the a few bits if you feel better but I'm sure your car will be fine as you look after it .
You won't be thrashing it so enjoy the holiday

Just returned from almost three weeks in Scotland. Stunning scenary and not overcrowded. We loved the old ferry at Glenelg and were blessed with beautiful weather at the Isle of Skye for several days. The narrow winding roads are a pleasure to drive and because a 940 is relatively narrow, passing on single track roads was also quite easy.
Taking the ferry from Rotterdam to Hull Scotland is not that far, but all in all we have put about 2500 miles in addition to the already 450K our trusty 940 has covered sofar. With a little bit of planning (myLPG.eu) we only needed to drive 10 miles once on petrol to reach the single LPG station on Skye, the rest we managed on LPG.
As a daily driver our 940 gets its regular maintenance, so I was not overly concerned about the trip. It passed the Dutch equavalent of the MOT with flying colours just 2 weeks before. I did carry some tools and parts I have collected over the years as spare (eg fuel relay, spare ECU, ignition coil), but this is more for ease of mind than really necessary.
It struck me how few 700/900 there are left on the UK roads. I noticed one in Glasgow and passed one on the Motorway going home again last week. Could even have been the same one... In the Dutch roads I encounter at least one every day and in the neighborhood of my hometown I know of at least four in a half a mile radius!

Have you got a mortgage in principal arranged to pay for the fuel?
