Default Volvo XC70 intrusion at RAF Mildenhall, 2017

Google didn't find a mention of this here, readers might be interested -

https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/y...rly+Bird+Brief

December 2017, an unnamed intruder in a black Volvo XC70 drives in past the gates at RAF Mildenhall and is chased around the site. At one point he's stopped behind a lieutenant colonel who's also driving a black XC70. When the lieutenant colonel proves who he is and is allowed to go on, the second guy goes on too - only trustworthy people drive Volvos?

Later on the car is fired on, but no effect on the driver. Eventually they trap his car against a ramp for an aircraft, a V-22 Osprey.

Also on BBC - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42401585

FWIW.

Only things I know of Mildenhall is that A] it was at one time home to one of the most beautiful aircraft ever made-the SR-71 Blackbird and B]the Yanks used to put on some cracking airshows there!

I used to deliver to a variety of military bases, admittedly before 9/11 but after the Mill Hill Barracks bombing, and my recollection is that the Brit bases had pretty strict security (sometimes to the point of 'jobsworth') but the Yanks only wanted to be reassured you knew where on the base to go and that you would 'have a nice day'. I've yet to be convinced that for all their gun toting hubris that the Yanks are 10% as good as the Brits in such circumstances.

The pop-up barrier they show in the photos wouldn't stop anyone determined, they'd simply go round it on the verge!

I'm amazed it took them so long to stop him and all their shots missed - maybe they need more practice on the firing range!

That said, on Lakenheath, they have a few Hum-Vees with 50 cals - doubt the shots from them would have missed!

Yep that's the worrying thing loosing off all those shots & not stopping the Car. Agree though with Lakenheath have seen some of those touring about whilst sitting by the fence.

They should have just shot the tyres out, simples.

Plane spotting or bird spotting when sat by the fence?

Eagles & Raptors but one's with Engines. But I would add last time there I did take a Bin Bag & clean up after those that don't understand the concept of not leaving litter.

Default Litter. Pet hate of mine.

Well done Andy regarding the litter picking. I regularly pick up other peoples’ litter. It really annoys me. A bridle path near me is used by many dog walkers, including myself, the vast majority of whom pick up as they should. BUT. The path is also used by pupils attending the local high school (sorry, academy). There are several strategically placed litter bins along the length of the path but these pupils just throw their litter on to the ground, often within a couple of feet of a litter bin. I’ve complained to the school but have not even received an acknowledgement.
Sorry to go off topic.

Ian.

I'm guessing you go to the viewing area up the little lane from the traffic lights then? Or sit along the perimeter fence on the verge of the main A1065?
