Hi Steve, welcome to V40 ownership. You'd have likely been used to a good old fashioned chain set up (assuming your 340 was a 1.4 OHV Renault engine), whereas your prospective 1.8 V40 does indeed have a cambelt. A generic OBD reader will work on it as well, and the socket for which can be found under the driver's side knee area at the centre console (just up and to the left of the clutch).
Hope this helps, Joe

s40 engine info
hello, Joe thanks for the info. The re does seem to be lots of potential problems compared to the 3. 40 only fault was a blocked jet. Big deterrent is lack of dealership for parts. does it have readily available bosch sensors like many other cars? all best, steve

Hi,
There are two different 1.8 engines fitted to S/V40's Engine one is the 4cyl petrol variant of Volvo's modula engine as fitted to all the other Volvo models in 4, 5 and 6 cylinder form. This engine is very reliable (as long as it's maintained properly like all engines) and should give into the early 200,000 miles before headgasket issues should show themselves. As it's part of the modula range the cambelt waterpump etc is the same as the bigger models so parts are readily available. Also there is a lot of information and knowledge as it's effective the same info minus a cylinder of the famous five. Engine two is Mitsubishi's Gasoline Direct Injection engine aka the GDI. This has a reputation for poor reliability as it was in the infancy of the technology when it went into the cars. They can be reliable if maintained to a decent standard and the horrible jobs not skipped. The engine is a unit born out of tightening emissions legislation, and not too keen on only pootling about town. Needs an Italian tuneup every now and then. Parts can be a bit harder to source and less people make them so cost more. Either way the car it's bolted to will sure you well. Most on the forum would pick the Volvo engine. |

Also forgot to mention that the 340 and the S/V40 were produced in the same NedCar factory in Holland, so your not in as foreign land as you think. Is very possible somebody who fitted something to your 340 also worked on the line and fitted something to you V40.
In future you might want to post a question like this in the 'General' forum as the wants section is mainly for parts etc...although wanting information technically fits the description. You would also get more replies. |
