I thought the D4's were five cylinder engines!? Or are certain models five cylinder & some aren't?

In the V70, the 5-cylinder 163 bhp D4 was superseded by the 4-cylinder 181 bhp D4 in 2014.

Interesting, thanks for confirming that.

What's the easy way to distinguish the four/five cylinder engines then?

So a car with a D4 badge on it doesn't necessarily mean it has a 5 cylinder engine...

I was under the impression that D3's & D4's for example were just detuned versions of the D5, or does it vary for different Volvo models?

Yes my D6 is a V60 D6 twin engine hybrid, 300 horses, 0-60 under 6 secs and no VED to pay 😀

It varies and it’s not straightforward.

You can find out about any given used vehicle for sale on Autotrader by checking out the Performance sub-section of the Specification section for the vehicle. There you’ll find the number of cylinders.

There are also a number of threads on this forum that tell all regarding engines.

I'm not sure if the performance section on AutoTrader is accurate. The last time I sold a car on AutoTrader, I had to manually put this info in and/or select options from drop down menus like what engine it had, the model etc (Inputting the reg didn't collate the info for me). So if you select the wrong option, the vehicle in question will be displayed as something that it isn't (Not intentionally, although I think it does happen).

This was a long time ago though, maybe its changed now.

For my 56 plate V70 2.4 D5 185 bhp is £346.50 or 1x @ £28.93 + 11x @ £28.87, that's the only way I roll, DD all the way
