I have done just short of 600 miles today on motorways and didn't see a single police car, but I saw hundreds of cars without rear lights on, and that is ignoring the need to have rear fog lights on for the conditions.
Here is the solution to the 'daytime fog scenario in Auto mode'. Switch on your rear fog lights. The headlights then come on.

The first hint of fog and I see that plenty of road users have switched on their rear fog lights at night. Can they not see that they are blinded by others doing the same thing and that rear fog lights soften the impact of brake lights coming on? I don't want to sound like a grumpy old man, but rear fog lights are only needed during the day in dense fog and at night in extremely poor visibility (much less than 50m).

To update the OP, the DRL's DO dim when the headlights come on, although they certainly didn't when I originally checked them.

Ref comments about driving in fog with just the DRL's on, I think doing so will be fine considering they are extremely bright and do not reflect against the fog creating a reduction in visibilty like headlights being on do.

I have fitted a set of aftermarket DRLs.

Firm memory they are at full power until the headlights are on dip when they are on half power and go off with main beam. Apparently this is to do with some American regs.
