That looks like a filter (made from compressed metal beads), probably there to protect the gauge and smooth out rapid changes in pressure.

Thanks gpl, I just put the hose on the end of the connector and sucked it and I could see the needle move up so it seems to be fine. Why didn't I think of that before?
