Sorry to keep commenting on this spoke to a gearbox specialist and they told me the 8.5mm is standard size transmission pipe and the 10mm joiner is to make sure it’s a tight fit.
He also said where the Volvo connectors that go into the gearbox and radiator are thinner than 8.5mm so the flow of fluid wouldn’t be effected. So still going to wait for a while to hopefully find a Volvo one but if not will probably buy one of the universal ones and fit that I’m doing a 650 mile round trip in the summer so want to get it done for then and have it serviced by Volvo to have the latest transmission software installed and to be abit cheeky and ask them to reset the oil counter as I will change all the fluid again. Will keep you updated. Daniel |

Update, just done a 200 mile run in 25 degrees c , followed by 10 miles of stop start on the m25 ( which previously would have caused flaring and false neutrals and occasional limp mode ) this time none of it , just as if I'd just left home , I can't praise the difference the oil cooler made enough

So after looking and speaking to a few places still couldn’t find a Volvo one with the pipes, so I went for a Davis Craig 30 row transmission cooler.
It’s got the same size pipes so the flow will be fine, I’ve made a bracket to mount it nicely and the pipe work is all in. Just waiting for my brother so hopefully plumb it all in and change the gearbox oil like the method in the video in this thread. So will post back once it’s all done. |

So it’s all done and plumbed in a little scary cutting the gearbox pipe as your committed then. The oil was dark abit, I did change it 3 months ago but only drain and fills so this way was much more thorough.
Only problem was went to level it last night and the level plug rounded off again which annoyed me as it was new 3 months ago. So after getting a new one again from Volvo managed to get it out with a screwdriver and hammer and the fluid was perfectly red which was nice to see. So will report back once I’ve used it abit, got a 650 mile round trip in the summer so glad it’s done, thanks again for help and comments. Daniel |

I'm 100% going to do this. I do loads of twin axle caravan towing and see this as great preventative maintenance. My old XC90 developed a transmission fault which manifested itself towing in the French Alps, it was fine once back at a sensible altitude until the following year at the same point more or less. It then started happening whenever I was towing uphill and the torque converter locked up.
I bought a newer model and want to prevent the same thing happening again. I changed the fluid on my 1st car twice and have changed it once on my present car for the mobil 3309. I've got enough left for a sump and dump so will fit this at the same time and top off. can't do any harm at all. |

I've found a cooler but the bottom pipe isn't with it, does anyone have a spare or know where I can find one? I've tried all the usual sources (I think).

That’s what I struggled with is the pipes, found the coolers but no pipes hope you find them.

I've finally got all the bits together and will give it a go this week. I'm thinking of painting the skid plate to freshen it up while it's removed, has anyone done the same and if so what paint did you use? I've got some aluminium spray but I think it's too light, i'm thinking of using steel wheel silver as it's a bit darker, any recommendations?

Ok, Oil cooler fitted in situ no problem.
I'm not sure about the pipework configuration. Does the short (uncut) pipe from the top of the radiator go into the top or bottom hole on the cooler, it looks quite stretched when fitted to the bottom but on the youtube video it looks like that's the correct hole, can anyone clear it up for me before I start cutting pipes? I've left it for now but hope to get it done before I tow the caravan next Wednesday if possible. Is there anyone who's done this who can provide a definitive answer please? thanks. |
