OK by hand if you have a gorilla helping you. Otherwise you need a chain wrench or similar.

If yours is a late 99 you may have the paper type filter in the plastic housing which uses the large socket style remover.

Rich.

I've never used any kind of tool to remove the filter on my pre-98 850 at all.

If it's hard to turn, clean it off with some brake cleaner or the like and then take a sheet of rubber (like the kind old people use to open jars) and spin it off with that. An old marigold glove can work nicely for that too.

The oil filter is in quite a nice place on the 850, in that the pan surrounds it on a few sides meaning they are usually quite clean and rust free and there's a decent amount of room to get your hand around it.

But yeah, if it's the later type (paper element) it looks like you could get it off with a regular socket set maybe - don't be tempted; it'll just chew up the plastic!! The tool above ^ is great or sometimes a strap wrench can work in a pinch too.

Good luck!

Chris...

Just done the oil change on the Mini and had a look under the Volvo and it is the cartridge type (black plastic cover). Anyone know what size filter socket it needs?

Think I used the same fabric strap type oil filter remover for both my 850 (metal canister) and C70 (plastic canister). Can be a bit of a pain to use at times but gets the job done and doesn't damage anything.

Broke it when using it for my 760s oil change though (awkward location)...whoops...stitched it back together, good as new. Well except its now a centimetre or two shorter
