Default oil filter

RE V70 MY2000 Classic 140bhp auto B5244S2
Vadis shows both filter element and canister type oil filter as possible. My car has elemnt type at present. is it possible to replace this with canister type without any mods?

Obvious solution would be to replace like with like - take a squiz at what is fitted and, assuming no problems have been encountered, replace it with the same type - ie if its element why would you wish to replace it with a cannister type?

If you have an element type fitted it is reasonable to suggest to replace like with like - there is no obvious benefit to change the type - flow rates will be different as will non-return valves built into the cannister variant.

IMHO do not change the type that is already fitted
- the costs are marginal. Fit a replacement of what is fitted - chances are the current model was fitted by a Volvo dealer - why change what works - there is no real benefit in altering the type!

i don't think it would be possible to fit a canister style to a filter type as the threaded section is a different width

The only reason I ask is that I got a canister type from ebay before checking that was the one I needed , PLONKER that I am!, therefore not wanting to bin it I was asking if I could use it. I have since ordered the paper element type. Vadis shows both types but looks like I would need what it calls a 'nipple' ie tube threaded at either end to take the canister thread, just wondered if anyone had changed from element to canister.
