Default S40 Advice

I pick up my Volvo S40 2.0d R Design on Saturday. The car has done 86,000 miles and was wodering if there is anything I need to look out for. I know they need a particulte filter at 76,000 and can belt around 96,000. But is there anything I should steer clear of?

Hi
More details of the vehicle that you've just picked up would be more helpful for anyone to be able to help with suggestions etc.
Year
Engine
Manual/Auto
etc

Best regards

Check if its dpf equipped. If so the unit should have been replaced at 75k (and need an oil top up every 35k).
Check if front wishbone bushes have been replaced, they only last around 50k.
Cam belt change should be 150k, not 96k.

Also there were recalls for leaking washer fluid bottles affecting the cem, and also parking brake issues, can check on vosa website if your chassis number is affected or call dealer.

do you or any of you know somebody that had a cam belt changed at 150000 myne was changed at 97500 by Volvo.

in relation to DPF check first if you have it, the best way to see it is to go under the car and see where you would normally have a cylinder (similar to a cat on a petrol car ) with 2 pipes going out of it one at the front and the other at the back of it.

if you have it the DPF as said previously should have been be changed at 75000.

Re the cambelt, not a Volvo but a Transit Connect at work, 1.8 litre version of the Tdci engine (which is basically the same as the Volvo unit) had its belt done at 150k as whenever it was booked in before hand the dealer kept moving the goalpost regarding the cambelt schedule. No problems beforehand.

By all means change the cambelt at 96 or 97k for peace of mind, I have just stated when it is due, according to the Volvo dealer that sold me my car.

Hi All, the car defginately has a DPF and it is unknown if it has been replaced. The seller states the service history prior to him was lost but the volvo history can be purchased from Volvo so I will do this.

The fluid thats being mentioned, what is this and is it easy to top up/maintain? What does it do?

The fluid is changed at service as it has to be recorded with the vehicle service.

The fluid is called Eloys (sp) oil. It is in the tank situated under the chassis, just above the rear axle beam. Whenever the dpf is in its regeneration process it feeds oil from the eloys tank to fuel the burn process in the dpf. If it is not topped up at the recommended intervals (32k I believe) the tank will run dry and the dpf will not be able to complete the regen process. This will result in error codes being stored and the car may run in limp mode until it is returned to the dealer for eloys top up, possible dpf replacement or forced regeneration process.

Maybe the onus should be on the seller to purchase the service history from Volvo dealer for the vehicle they are selling, rather than the buyer. I would be inclined to point this out to him/her.
