Unhappy 200GLT Sale or Repair

Hi
My 200GLT may be up for sale. It is a 1988 and has all the extras such as voltmeter, outside air temperature, oil pressure, oil temperature, rear facing child seats, adjustable rear height suspension etc. The exact mileage is unknown as it has had a speedo change and the current one has stopped recording miles. The car has been a daily driver but the main problem is that the bearing and oil seal in the rear of the automatic gear box has failed. I was hoping it was the centre bearing on the propshaft but on inspection it proved to be the gearbox bearing. The other main problem is that the heater motor has just packed up. The car has a current MOT until June 2020.

I will put some pictures on as soon as I can figure out how to do it.

As it stands if I had a spare gearbox I would be tempted just to swap the rear end complete which can be done without taking the gearbox out of the car.

Anyone interested?

Hi
Thanks for the info,
as you say changing the bush and oil seal is not a big job and one I am familiar with. Slightly more of a problem if the shoulder on the drive flange is scored or the case damaged. I would have done it without a thought some years ago. I think the bush is about £25 and the oil seal slightly cheaper. I have come across several of the AW70 boxes with this problem most of them with over 150k on the clock.

Yes, I had the same problem on my 744GLE at around 180K, '740 Driver'. Part of my G/B casing broke off and disappeared onto the M1. I had the car recovered to Volsaa in Derby, who sourced and fitted a S/H tranny, which was still working well when I came to sell the car 20K on.

I also had a 245GLT previously, although mine was M+O/D. Given the current interest in the GLT, yours should sell easily if that is what you decide to do and the price were not unreasonable. However, over 20 years later and with the benefit of hindsight, I would seriously consider keeping and repairing your car, especially if you have already invested a lot of time and money in it.

Values are only going one way, and the240 is a highly usable classic. After 35 years of ownership embracing 1, 2, 3, 7, and 9 series cars, and a V70, I still think of the 245 as the definitive Volvo!

Regards, John.

At 191,000 my 1989 240 GLT Auto the tail housing was replaced with a used one at Volsaa engineering too as well as gearbox cross member and gearbox mount. My symptoms were the gearbox banging/clunking on the transmission tunnel. In the 10 years I owned the car, the biggest bill at £400. Wasn't getting used and wasn't allowed 3 cars on the car park and sold it.
Sold it with 234,000 on clock needing tlc. It was sold on recently on Ebay by the new owner.

Don't regret selling it as needed using and further work like heater fan replacing and tidying up and was already driving a 1996 940 SE LPT estate which I liked more as so quiet and had AC and ABS.

If I won the lottery I would buy it back and do a full restoration, as when I think of Volvo the 240 is what I think of.

James.
