Hello,

I could do with a spare key for my xc90.

Is it possible to recode a used one?
Or is my only option a new one?

thanks

Can the fob be re-used?

You have to buy a key, think they are about +£100, you have to take the car and the new key to the dealer to get them to reprogram them. Will be expensive........
Suppose the fob has to be done at the same time too.

Hi Richard, have a read through this thread and it will give answers.

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...light=key+code

In a nutshell. The transponder from one key that belongs to another XC90 cannot (should be read as "will not" by a dealer) be re programmed to match your car, nor can the remote to open the doors etc. This is simply a security measure and it works very well.

However, the original key itself can be re used if you wish. Search you tube on how to remove the key from the fob.

A new remote fob from a dealer comes with a code for them to use, they can then have authority to code this to your vehicle and code your existing key to match.

It's not cheap, but it is inexpensive when you consider the consequences of people re programming used fobs as and when they want.

If a fob is lost, then the best protection for your multi thousand pound car, is to have a new code issued to the vehicle for the existing / new fobs, so that a broken/ lost / stolen fob cannot be used in an unauthorised way.
ie nicking your car the next night.

To get into the key fob, it needs to be hack sawed open. The assembly is glued. I dare say heating the fob in an oven may release the glue, but what temperature it needs to be done at without further damage is an unknown. I presume they are factory sealed by means of an ultrasonic heat method in the first place.

Guys, If I'm wrong on this be sure to put me right with the facts.

Thanks for the reply,

I work for motor trade main dealers and they do not have all the answers.
Its not black magic, I'm sure there is an aftermarket system which can do the job.
Before I start making phone calls, I thought someone on here might know.

I havent lost the key just need a cheap spare just incase.

I have just repaired my key aswell, so I'm quite happy to cut into another.

Dont bother with the new style ones,
Nothing wrong with the old ones!

Just to clarify, my key is not lost, I just have one and would like a spare!
